Author: Bill Caplan
With a passion for architecture and people-friendly design, and an engineer's understanding of sustainable interactions, Bill Caplan, Assoc. AIA, devoted a decade to reconciling the physical, sensible and operative manifestations of architectural design which culminated in "Buildings are for People". With the precision of an engineer and sensitivity of an architect he explored and photographed architecture on five continents from both human and environmental perspectives. After 34 years at the multi-national company he founded, working with diverse programs ranging from the race to decode the human genome to space exploration, his career evolved from high-tech engineering to architecture. Caplan holds a Master of Architecture from Pratt Institute and a Materials Engineering degree from Cornell University, College of Engineering. He is currently researching a new book devoted to the built environment’s role in global warming, slated for publication in 2020.
Caplan’s Photo Essay of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, “Contrasts 21c”
was published in 2019. Beautifully expressed in full color with descriptive text, evocative photography transports the reader into distant locales in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. “Contrasts 21c” draws attention to the conflicts between self-sufficiency and sustainability in an admixture of ancient tradition and present-day reality. Unveiling the incredible contrasts between rural and city life that still exists, it addresses the cultural diversity of this region and its challenges.
